The Observer reports that Google is in talks with Orange "about a multi-billion-dollar partnership to create a 'Google phone' which makes it easy to search the web wherever you are".A Google-branded phone could include a browser that uses Google's transcoder to optimize web pages for the phone, easy to access Google search, maps, Gmail, Blogger and maybe more."The device would not be revolutionary: manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese firm specializing in smart phones and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), it might have a screen similar to a video iPod."Last month, Eric Schmidt said: "Your mobile phone should be free. It just makes sense that subsidies should increase"While a Google Phone is just a rumor for the moment, you can't deny it's an interesting idea.

The Google gPhone Exclusively From Sprint Nextel And Google?

Google announced an alliance with Sprint Nextel that will see the two companies working together to bring Google’s search, digital mapping technologies and GTalk chat service to Sprint’s WiMax network, which, once it’s completed, will theoretically allow wireless Web access at speeds and prices similar to cable connections.The deal follows the announcement of Sprint’s plans to collaborate with Clearwire to build out a nationwide WiMax network by the end of 2008. It also follows Google’s conditional pledge to drop at least $4.6 billion on the Federal Communications Commission’s auction of the 700-megahertz spectrum, which has long been said to be the future of WiMax (with fewer line-of-sight issues and wider coverage and better building penetration).Coincidence? Or part of a master plan in which Google wins the 700-megahertz spectrum, uses it to help complete the Sprint/Clearwire nationwide WiMax network effort and then announces Rubin’s Google Phone–upending the telco-cable duopoly in the process?

CruCrunchgear has posted some new news that insiders claim not only the existence of a googlephone but its release Q1 2008.Here are some info they got ...
Google is currently assessing over twenty HTC models and refining its final handset design and will create a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail and the calendar app. There is also some talk that Samsung will be releasing gPhone handsets as well, but that has not been confirmed.One extremely interesting point? Google Talk will become a part of the phone, adding VoIP capability to the hardware.The software should be like Yahoo! Mobile, a similar application that leverage’s Yahoo’s mail and search solutions for handsets. However, that Google is going ahead with an actual hardware launch and may be using its own OS — the tipster mentioned WinMo 6 but there is a better chance that they will be using a Linux-based OS — and hardware is quite a shocker. Does Google Need the gPhone ?

Andrei Jezierski, a founder of consultancy i2 Partners in New York, e-mailed me this morning with a really interesting idea: He thinks that, perhaps, after threatening the wireless industry with its rumored gPhone project for months, Google may not even need to come out with that platform after all.The reason why Google would have wanted to come out with the gPhone platform -- and to buy wireless spectrum -- in the first place was because the company felt that carriers and handset makers barred its applications from appearing on mobile handsets. Until now, only a select few of Google's apps have made it onto a handful of cell phones. That was bad news for Google, hoping to grow its advertising revenues through mobile search.But that situation is changing rapidly. One example: Today, Motorola unveiled its catalogue of third-party software for its mobile phones. It will allow software developers that are part of its developer's program to peddle their wares directly to all Motorola phone users.Another example: Sprint Nextel has recently announced it will build an open wireless network in close partnership with Google, which will provide many of its applications to the network's users. That's exactly the sort of an arrangement that Google has striven for in the first place.Google is also enjoying an enthusiastic response to its recent wide release of advertising platform AdWords for mobile phones.Bottom line: Without even unveiling the gPhone or bidding for the wireless spectrum, Google is already dramatically changing the wireless industry.Businessweek
